2008 Late Summer Garden SUBSCRIBE NOW

Below are some snapshots and related comments from our 2008 late summer garden.

In the late summer and early fall, many plants have completed their season.

There's little work to do with those that remain except daily harvesting and storage or putting food up for winter.

My Bio

We grown green peppers in wire cages to give them extra support
against the occasional high winds of summer storms.

The cage also provides support for branches bearing the weight of several large peppers.
The large open squares make it easy to reach in and harvest.

squash

squash

Delicata Squash have a great flavor.

Beware of Squash Bugs!

raspberry

Our raspberries are kept under netting to protect them from pests.
Japanese Beetles arrive in June and love to munch on the tender leaves.
Bees and wasps come in September to feast on the ripe fruit.

okra

Okra continues to produce through early fall months up to ther first frost..

okra

Each beautiful okra blossom develops into a pod.
Pick when still small so that they remain tender.

fig

Fruits on our fig bush ripen in late September to October.
As the nights turn cool the ripening stops, so that we are unable
to harvest much of the fruit the bush produces. We are currently experimenting with another variety.

Note the watermelon, bottom right.
